Twenty-five weeks in and consistently learning new things. I’m not talking about the knowledge that we are gaining from our books and instructors – I’m talking about learning more and more about the opportunities that come from being a Hospital Support Specialist (HSS). When I first signed up for the course, I had a preconceived notion in my head that I would be trained for working in a hospital setting, which is what drew me to this course. It wasn’t until this week that I found out that we are qualified for way more than just dealing with papers and procedures in the hospital. As an Hospital Support Specialist you are able to work in over 15 different sectors of health career opportunities. This includes but is not limited to:
- Provincial or federal health care plan offices (Armed Forces, Department of Veterans)
- Medical software companies
- Midwifery
- Criminal investigation
- Coroner
- Laser surgery
These are just some of the areas in which you can be placed. I had no idea that these sectors of hospitals and or clinics were even an option for me, let alone in my realm of capabilities upon completion of the course. I think this is something Stenberg should include in the brochure upon entering. Having this new information sheds a whole new light on the program for me, it’s like I am re-excited to be in the class all over again. I first wanted to be in Emergency admitting patients in Vancouver General Hospital (the hospital on my top of the list), but taking into consideration practicum placement and other factors, I would not be disappointed if I were to be placed elsewhere because I know that all these advanced opportunities are out there for me. As a person that becomes “bored”, if you will, HSS is a great career because there are many areas to switch and bounce between, so the career that I love and paid for does not become stagnant or unappealing.
I will say it again, I am so incredibly happy that I have learned and am learning new things about my course all the time, I think that is what keeps you stimulated and motivated.
SIDENOTE* I just realized that maybe Stenberg keeps this information secret till midway through to keep us motivated and always on our toes. If this is so, BRAVO Stenberg BRAVO!
