I am of the philosophy that there is always room for improvement and we should always follow our dreams. I believe in continuous learning, so had I not chosen this field I would have been pursuing some form of educational advancement like my masters or a level of certification in my field. Therefore, the transition into a new career wasn’t difficult at all – I viewed it as a next step in self improvement. This made returning to school very easy. The decision on a second career was due to my desire to be in the medical field from a very young age. Pursing this new career is helping me accomplish just that.
Although my past career was rewarding and I accomplished a lot – something was still missing and I wanted to do more. I had been out of school for over five years “will I be able to do this?” I asked myself. I’d say the most difficult tasks were narrowing down my school choices and being courageous enough to start over again. Once I made the decision everything fell into place and all is going great thus far. I have just the right amount of challenge and every course gives me further confirmation that this is the right choice for me.
As a mature student, I think age is just a number and that regardless of age everyone of my peers including myself is in this program to succeed and build a solid career. Such an outlook is not affected by age at all. For me failing is not an option because I hold myself to a high standard. My focus is to be as proficient and competent in all that I do so my level of maturity doesn’t change how I see things. If anything, it gives me more insight into what is truly important to me and what I want to accomplish at this point in my life. It gives me the focus I need.
I love learning new things. I love working with people. Analysis and investigative research come easy to me as well as problem solving; all of which are part of the daily workings of a Cardiology Technologist. The fact that in the end I will be helping someone is even more gratifying.
Motivation and drive I believe to be innate, however I think my university years were instrumental in my adjustment and have allowed me to know what is expected and the calibre of work I should always put forth. So school this time around it’s no different than the last. My previous career required regular skills upgrade and keeping up with new technological advancements. This made going back to school seamless. The only bump in the transition was training my mind to be in study mode and focused for a longer period of time.
My advice to any mature student – pursue what drives you!
To all those wishing to start over – it’s never too late or too early to start!
Never let fear be the deciding factor in not doing something that brings you closer to your passion.
