When I made the decision to pursue a career in Cardiology Technology, I had never heard of Stenberg College and I had never been to the lower mainland before. I completed the application process through distance communication, and took a leap of faith by registering before taking a campus tour.
My College
Stenberg College is located in a high-rise office tower in Surrey City Centre. The building is wrapped in glass and features a round modern design that radiates off a mixture of blues and greens. Attached to the tower is a shopping mall, which is great for picking up spare school supplies or a much needed caffeine boost. There is a brand new public library across the way, where my classmates go to form study groups. The sky train station is also on property, which is hugely beneficial for all students who commute.
The college itself takes up the entire seventh floor of the office tower and is always full of life. The classrooms are stocked with all the medical equipment we need and are surrounded by floor to ceiling windows with fantastic views. I’d say the overall size of the campus is a bit smaller than average, but they are in the midst of expanding and the cozy feeling adds to the personal education experience. It’s also nice to walk through the hallways without the assistance of a map to know where I’m going.
Student Events
A pleasant surprise about attending Stenberg College, is the amount of campus life events that take place. They host what’s called “Cinema Sundays”. Every student has access to complimentary movie theatre tickets, complete with popcorn!
For Valentine’s Day, candy grams were sold. Each student was given a bundle of sweets complements of the college. On St. Patrick’s day, we were treated to coffee and baked goods. There was also a limerick writing contest where students had the opportunity to win gift cards and cash prizes.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Vancouver, it is a city that loves hockey and Stenberg College is no different. They strongly support the Vancouver Canucks hockey team and even held an exclusive event on campus. Canuck’s forward player Mike Santorelli came to Stenberg, who my good friend Christina got to meet face to face. She entered the “biggest fan” contest and won an official Santorelli jersey. He signed personally for her.
As April has only just begun, I’m interested to see what the college has in store for us for future holidays and celebrations. There always seems to be something to look forward too at Stenberg College. It’s rare to see the hallways bare of festive decorations. Campus life activities are a good way of allowing students to mix and mingle in between lectures. Also, showing a little school pride and student appreciation.
