Hello future Stenberg Students!
I am only two months away from finishing the Nursing Unit Clerk Program here at Stenberg, and is it flying by ever so fast! It has really been a crazy journey but I am so excited for the future.
As of right now, we are studying for our final comprehensive review exam. We just finished Diagnostic Order Transcription, and that was our last module. I am not going to give false information and tell you it’s going to be “easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy” because in any profession that requires schooling, not every day will be easy. What I can say is that the instructors here are absolutely amazing. They are very passionate about their students and in every aspect push their students to strive for success. The curriculum for the Nursing Unit Clerk program is phenomenal! It is designed perfectly – we started off with Orientation, of course, then Computer Training, and then worked our way to our first official module of the program which is Anatomy/Physiology/Pathology (A&P). A&P was one of my favorite modules, because it wasn’t just learning about the body systems, it was learning a whole new language. The “Language of Medicine” as our text book states is on the front cover page.
After learning a whole new language our next module was Communications. Communications was fun, we played around with phones and fax machines (not working), and taking turns talking out loud as if we were answering a phone call in the unit. As you can tell, from the first couple of modules, everything flows – learning a new language in health care and then taking what we have learned and applying it physically and verbally. I definitely underestimated health care – until I came to Stenberg. The environment is set up like a hospital. There are mock patient rooms; we wear scrubs everyday as if we are going straight to work. Stenberg created the hospital environment not only to make us feel like we are in the field of our choosing, but also to prepare the students for practicum and what to expect when applying and out on the job. Practicum – the real deal – is an exciting time! My cohort will be going out on practicum next week!
