A Day In the Life of a Cardio Tech

With this post, I would like to give you an idea of what it would really be like to be a Cardiology Technologist (now having some days of clinical under my belt). I always liked the idea of working in the hospital but was never completely certain on where my area of expertise lied. Before taking this course, I did not fully understand the role of the Cardiology Technologist in the hospital environment, but having spent a few days there now, I have had my eyes opened up.

From Data to Care

As with any job, there are the things that you will be doing every day. Every day is likely to involve an electrocardiogram (this is why that course is so important!). You will be analyzing about a million cardiograms every day. You will often be doing stress tests, and even Holter scans, likely. I have found that most times, everything is by the book, with no major surprises to worry about. I like that this job (while in a very stressful environment) is pretty stress free.

I made it sound easy for a minute did I not? Well, there is still quite a bit of action every day of work. You could be doing four calls to the emergency department on a lunch break. You could be guiding the public out of the way so emergency personnel can get to a patient in need. You could be consoling a patient who is in the worst pain of their life. All these things I have done already (before beginning my practicum mind you!).

The job does get its fair share of excitement. Things I have also being doing on a daily basis are cracking jokes to cheer up a patient, learning about people’s lives, and learning about interesting research and procedures from very talented cardiologists.

Intelligence and Efficiency

I find when I tell people what I am going to school for they are often confused as to what a Cardiology Technologist actually does. From what I have seen they do all this and more. It is a career where you can go home every night feeling like you have done some good for another person. They are an integral part to a system that thrives on intelligence and efficiency. Everything needs to be completely quickly and correctly and Cardiology Technologists are highly skilled workers.

I hope if you are interested in a career as a Cardiology Technologist this all appeals to you. These are just a few of the experiences I have had so far, I am sure there are many more to come as I have heard numerous stories from my instructors. It sounds clichéd but I like to help my patients in whatever way I can. It may be analyzing a life threatening arrhythmia quickly and initiating the treatment sequence or just making their day a little better by being friendly. Whatever it is, it is those things that make the job worthwhile. This is how I know I have chosen the right path.

Another important part to being a Cardiology Technologist is a great sense of humour. This is a valentine I received from one of my lovely classmates.
