I am a young girl who has travelled a thousand miles in order to find herself. I am a daughter who wants to help her mother who has supported her throughout her life. I am a sister who would like to provide all the good fortune to her younger sister. But I am not the only one; I am just like all other international students who leave their families behind for better education and career opportunities.
I remember the day I received my Visa. My mother had the widest smile on her face and my sister was excited for all the presents I’d be sending her from overseas. Whereas, I was just wondering how I was going to make it all possible.
Back in my country, I had never stepped out of my house alone. My mother was afraid that I might get lost in the journey from Delhi to Canada. However, I always had a feeling that everything will turn out to be fine. After all, I had a family in Canada to take care of me. I was hoping that life would be as easy as the one I had in India. But this is not how things work in Canada. Here, you have to get out of your shell if you want to achieve something. You must work hard to achieve your dreams.
I was already enrolled in a science program at another institution so all I had to do was continue studying there. Though life had different plans and I ended up switching schools and changing my program to something I found more interesting.
I know we all want to do something ‘big’ but I ask you, what is ‘big’? People try to push me towards a career that offers a bigger paycheck, but money is not everything. If your heart is not in it, it is of no use.
Presently, I am enrolled in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Diploma program at Stenberg College. I came here to be a part of the ECE program and now I am a blogger too. I have always enjoyed writing for myself and now I have the opportunity to share it with everyone. This is my ‘big’ and I love it.
