Working with a child with autism is a rewarding and challenging career. We’ve put together five tips to help you work with autistic children:
- Realize the children you are working with are more than their diagnosis.
These children are individuals with autism, but they are also individuals with interests, likes, dislikes, and passions. Try and get to know them the same way you would try and get to know anyone else.
- If someone isn’t understanding your instructions, try and deliver them in a different way.
Everyone learns differently. With autistic children, it is especially important to pay attention to each individual’s specific needs. Don’t push when something simply isn’t working – try something new!
- Be patient and breathe.
Develop a system for yourself that allows you to enjoy every aspect of your day. It’s all about finding a technique that works for you, so don’t be afraid to explore.
- Take time to take care of your own mental health.
Remember why you chose this education career. Embrace and strive for the good moments. Take a break if you need it so that you can jump back in with the positivity you need to do your best.
- Most importantly, enjoy your time with these kids.
Be a symbol of positivity in their lives, and know that you are lucky to spend your time as an aid to a child with autism.
