How to Work with a Child with Autism
Working with a child with autism is a rewarding and challenging career. We’ve put together five tips to help you work with autistic children:
These children are individuals with autism, but they are also individuals with interests, likes, dislikes, and passions. Try and get to know them the same way you would try and get to know anyone else.
Everyone learns differently. With autistic children, it is especially important to pay attention to each individual’s specific needs. Don’t push when something simply isn’t working – try something new!
Develop a system for yourself that allows you to enjoy every aspect of your day. It’s all about finding a technique that works for you, so don’t be afraid to explore.
Remember why you chose this education career. Embrace and strive for the good moments. Take a break if you need it so that you can jump back in with the positivity you need to do your best.
Be a symbol of positivity in their lives, and know that you are lucky to spend your time as an aid to a child with autism.
