Stenberg is an amazing school and I’m so glad I decided to further my education here. However it wasn’t an easy decision trying to find a school that worked for me and my schedule. There are hundreds of schools out there, and it becomes harder and harder to separate the good ones from the not so good.
After high school I decided I needed to take a break, so I took a year off and relaxed. I wish I could say I worked hard and saved some money, but that didn’t happen! I enjoyed my time off with friends and family. When the following September rolled around I decided to enroll in school. Without much thought and debate I chose to go for a degree in Criminology.
Need of a change
Becoming a police officer was always an interest of mine. My parents thought differently though, constantly reminding me of the risks involved. The intense pressure of the job was never a deterrent for me however. I remember being really excited to “finally start my life”, but it was short-lived. After completing the first semester, which I really did enjoy, I switched locations to the Langley campus for the second semester. I ended up having all five classes with my friend, which was totally coincidental. It wasn’t long before we were swapping CRIM1100 for Grande Caramel Macchiato’s at Starbucks. After a whole year wasted I decided yet again I needed a change…
I was always a little jealous of the people who graduated high school, went straight to work and loved it every day for the rest of their lives. Almost every member of my family is like that. My mom graduated high school and has been working with the same company ever since and she couldn’t be happier. My father was the same; he found his calling in computer software. He has been lucky in that it has taken him all over the world and he was been very successful in it. Seeing my parent’s accomplishments gave me the urge to find something that I would love to do for the rest of my life.
A career as a Health Care Assistant
The thing that scared me the most I think, is that fact that forever is a long time to be doing the same thing day in and day out. The only things that I imagined doing for the rest of my life was travelling and helping people in any way I could. I knew that if I found a rewarding career, the travelling would follow.
It was a hard decision to change “career paths” from Criminology to health care, but I knew that health care was where I was destined to be. Since I was a little girl I remember dreaming of helping people who could no longer help themselves. It’s the most amazing thing to sit down with the elderly and give them your undivided attention. Even if you only have half an hour. The fact that you’re taking the time to talk to them makes their day. It’s a great feeling knowing I have found a career that I could imagine doing for the rest of my life! I love caring for people and I know a career as a Health Care Assistant will bring so much joy to my life.
Choosing Stenberg College may have taken me a few years, but I couldn’t be happier with my choice. This is such an amazing school, I’m so sad it’s almost over!
