Mojgan Karimykhoshroo’s journey from a successful career in Iran, to a new beginning in Canada at over 50 years of age, exemplifies the power of lifelong learning. Her story is a reminder that with determination and a positive outlook, individuals can overcome any challenge.
Life in Iran
Life was comfortable for Mojgan and her family in Iran. From an early age, Mojgan had a love for learning, and, in 1993, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Mojgan’s career flourished over the next decade, leading her to become a hospital matron and, later, health insurance inspector. It was in the hospital that she met her future husband, and then started a family.
Starting a new life
Hoping for a better future for their son, she and her husband took the leap and moved to Canada, where they had to start from scratch, like many other immigrants. Mojgan worked in entry-level jobs to support her family, while her husband, who had been a medical doctor in Iran, studied for his license to practice medicine in Canada. After several years of hard work, she found a position as an assistant in Walmart’s Vision Centre, working with a supportive manager and coworkers who treated her like family. Mojgan loved her job, yet, as an immigrant, her education and experience were not recognized in Canada. She took the plunge and decided to go back to school.
“Mojgan is always willing to help others and contribute positively to the classroom environment.” – Florence Cheng, Instructor
Wanting more
Finding the right program was challenging, as she needed to consider finances and have the flexibility to continue working. Stenberg College’s online Optician program met all her needs. She had a great desire to enhance her career and earn the necessary credentials to become a Licensed Optician. After years of working as an assistant at Walmart, she craved more responsibility and wanted to be able to answer customers’ medical questions without relying on others. Her decision was also motivated by a desire to progress in her profession while continuing to work in customer service at a place she had come to love.
Back to school
Mojgan juggled work and school while supporting her classmates and became known as the”second mom” in class, always making people smile. Mojgan explained, “a smile is a bridge to communication,” and her positive mindset and sense of humour were intended to create a deeper bond and connection with her classmates. One of her instructors, Florence Cheng noted that “Mojgan is always willing to help others and contribute positively to the classroom environment.”
Mojgan’s son, Kourosh, recognized his mother’s determination and resilience. “She has become my role model, showing me that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. I’m so proud of my mom!” With gratitude, Mojgan thanks her family and instructors for contributing to her success.

A new chapter
Mojgan achieved an impressive 93% grade point average and is now a Licensed Optician at Walmart. Her new position allows her to apply her knowledge and better serve her clients. Her instructor, Mercy Essuah, says that Mojgan is empathetic and “exemplifies the qualities of integrity and professionalism.” Not only have her career options broadened, but she has renewed confidence. Having worked at Walmart for years, Mojgan continues to feel the love and support of her management and colleagues.
Life is so much better for Mojgan and her family today. Her husband is closer to becoming a medical doctor in Canada. Kourosh graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in computer science and is now employed as a software engineer—a future that Mojgan and her husband sacrificed so much for.
Inspiring others
Mojgan’s story is an inspiration to others, especially those who are hesitant about going back to school. Her advice is simple but powerful. “Don’t listen to negative words from anyone. If you have a dream, follow it.”
