The importance of self-care is well-known among caregivers. But sometimes there is a huge gap between knowing about it and practising it. People get busy in their lives and engulfed in commitments, and sometimes it seems impossible to set aside even 10 minutes in the day for yourself.
So, we’ve compiled a list of ideas you can explore to reboot in five minutes or less:
Start your very own box of sunshine
You will need a box, jar, or drawer (if you can spare one). On a piece of paper, write something that made you happy that day. Then, fold the paper and place it in the box. Do this as often as you’d like. When you feel the need for a boost, open your notes from the box of sunshine for a quick pick me up.
Smell your favourite scent
Try Lemon for concentration, Lavender to relieve nervous tension, Jasmine for confidence and optimism, Rosemary to prevent fatigue and headache, and Peppermint for an energy boost.
Register for a free workshop
Attend for our upcoming event about Compassion Fatigue and Burnout – The Real Cost of People-helping on Wednesday, November 8, where you will learn how to take care of the heart that allows you to be an effective therapist.
Do a little dance
Play an upbeat track, close the door and curtains if you’d like, and let loose. Dance like nobody’s watching (because you’ve shut the door) and allow your body to move whichever way it wants to and let the rhythm guide you.
Breathe
When all else fails, inhale. Take a slow, deep breath and feel the air as it fills your chest. Hold it in for one second and quickly exhale. Do this three times.
Caring for yourself prevents burning out and fatigue, and helps you refocus on the things that matter the most to you. Take care of yourself, so you can continue to take care of others. You deserve this.
