A Life Rewritten:
Tim Finds Clarity and Purpose
At 41, Tim Chorney sits tall, ready to tell his story. Proud and purposeful describes a man who, for years, believed he would live in the shadow of potential he could never reach.
Until his late thirties, Tim believed his story was already written. Education, family, and success were not part of his story. Living on autopilot, he felt life had quietly passed him by. Stuck in unfulfilling jobs, burdened by decades of undiagnosed mental health challenges, he was troubled by the thought that he had missed his chance at something bigger. “I had no direction,” he says. “I was just meandering, and I thought this would be my existence for the rest of my life.”
Yet during those uncertain years, one quality continuously manifested itself, even when he didn’t notice it. “I ended up being a trainer in every job I ever had,” he explains. His ability to teach and support others were subtle clues to his potential. But at the time, Tim couldn’t recognize it. He didn’t have answers. He hadn’t asked the questions.
Seeking Clarity
Since childhood, Tim knew he was different. He excelled academically, but was socially awkward. “From the first day of kindergarten, I was always at the top of my class,” he remembers, “but I never fit in.”
As an adult, the fear of the unknown had held him back. He describes his “paralyzing anxiety” when faced with change, which kept him bound to his comfort zone. He struggled with self-acceptance, drifting in and out of unhealthy relationships, believing he didn’t deserve more. “It’s impossible to let someone love you if you can’t love yourself,” he said. Despite being bright and capable, his days were marked by a sense of emptiness. He never felt truly understood nor that he belonged.
It was not until he turned 39 that he received a life-changing diagnosis. He is neurodivergent. The diagnosis was a turning point, an explanation. “It gave me clarity,” he said. “For the first time, my life and my struggles made sense.”
Finding Answers
He didn’t love himself right away, but he was starting to like himself. And, as things sometimes go, Tim met Stephanie, who became a driving force in his life. “When Stephanie came into my life, she saw that I was hurting, and she knew how to help build me up.”
With a newfound understanding of himself and with Stephanie’s encouragement, Tim began to consider a different path, one he had avoided for years–going back to school. He explains that “one of the biggest reasons for my depression as an adult was that I never went back to school.”
Together, Tim and Stephanie explored different educational options and Tim enrolled in the Education Assistant program at Stenberg College.
Returning to School
Stepping into the classroom as a student was the next step toward a life Tim never believed possible. During his practicum at an elementary school, he quickly discovered a natural ability to connect with students, especially with those who struggled academically or socially. “I was these kids, I fit in so well with them,” he says passionately. “Kids that normally wouldn’t work with anyone wanted to work with me.” This was where Tim belonged.
His patience, empathy, and ability to engage children stood out, and Tim was hired full time at the school. He smiles, “I love the whole crew, they’re incredible, and the students are just a delight. I made so many amazing connections with students and teachers. It feels like home.” The classroom became more than a workplace; it became a space where Tim could finally turn his life experience and talent into a meaningful career. Students who felt overlooked or frustrated found in him someone who not only understood their challenges but had “lived them,” he reflects. “That is exactly why I am able to connect with the kids so easily.”
The strengths he had once overlooked: his ability to teach, to relate, to uplift, had been there all along. Now, they had purpose. “I’ve always been good at teaching and supporting people, no matter the subject,” he says. “It came naturally to me. I always loved it.”
Today, that lifelong talent has led him to a path he never believed he would walk. “For the first time in my life, I have a career that I adore. I love going to work every day.”
Family and Fulfillment

While Tim was finding professional fulfillment, his personal life also blossomed. “On the second day of classes, my partner walked up to me while I was on the computer and held up what looked like a positive COVID-19 test. I thought ‘Oh no, we're all sick again,’ he laughed. A moment later, he realized what it truly meant. He was going to be a father.
“I always wanted a family and a partner. I just didn't ever expect to have one.”
Everything Tim once believed was out of reach–self-acceptance, love, family, and purpose, became his reality. With courage and determination, he claimed the life he had once thought impossible, breaking free from old fears and limitations.
A Life Transformed

At 41 years young, Tim Chorney walked across the stage of his graduation ceremony, not just as a student, but as a symbol of what is possible. Today he is a thriving Education Assistant, a proud father, and the second runner-up for Stenberg College’s Student of the Year. “I cannot explain the way my life has changed,” he says, clearly in awe.
Tim’s life today reflects the choices and courage that reshaped it. With each step, from seeking answers, to returning to school, to embracing love and fatherhood, he rewrote his story. And while purpose can arrive at any stage of one’s life, the most powerful chapters are often the ones still waiting to be written.
