Pharmacy Technician Lab Experience
I still remember the first day of my Pharmacy Tech labs like it was yesterday. Walking into the parking lot in front of the lab, not knowing what to expect or who was who, I could feel a mix of nerves and excitement. Seeing everyone’s smiling faces, hugging, and sharing that pure joy of finally meeting in person is something I’ll truly never forget. I was so nervous to meet everyone in person and to learn all the technical skills needed to become a good Pharmacy Technician, but it turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of the entire program.
Starting to Get Hands-On
We started off the labs by splitting into three lab blocks. This was where we learned how things work in a community/retail pharmacy setting: using the Kroll software, typing up prescriptions, and performing non-sterile compounding.
Our lab was set up like a real pharmacy, complete with shelves of fake medications and organized workstations. I remember counting the imitation pills on the tray for the first time and thinking, “Wow, I’ve seen people do this on TikTok and now I’m actually doing it myself!” We also had a challenge to find which bottle had banana candy in it (and yes, we ended up finding it!).
We spent hours practicing prescription entry on Kroll, learning the small— but important — details to double-check every time when preparing labels. During the compounding portion, we created all sorts of creams, solutions, and suspensions. One of my absolute highlights was making capsules using the punch method! This involved us holding an empty open capsule and tapping it repeatedly into a tightly packed base of powder until the capsule fills up, and closing it with the other end to seal it!
All three lab groups had a fun competition to see who could make the most capsules within the required range, and our group won! We celebrated by walking into class singing the Queen rock classic, We Are the Champions, and how we'd keep on “punching” until the end. It was such a funny and unforgettable moment that really showed how close we’d all become.
Transitioning into Hospital Labs
After community pharmacy, we transitioned into the hospital pharmacy labs, where things were more serious and technical. We learned about sterile compounding, hospital operations, and how to use Meditech for hospital order entry.
The first day of hospital labs were full of sweet treats as one of our instructors and some of our classmates had brought in home baking as a mini celebration of our successes!
The hospital labs were also where we were introduced to aseptic handwashing and proper garbing techniques. I’ll never forget demonstrating how to put on PPE for preparation of chemotherapy drugs; I was so nervous that I started sweating inside my gown. It was intense, but it gave me such a real sense of what working in a hospital pharmacy would feel like.
We learned how to use needles, syringes and prepare IV bags for medications. Learning the importance of sterile technique was a skill that was truly drilled into us (for the right reasons!). We also got to see different kits that are used in the hospital for different kinds of emergencies. The difference between community and hospital labs truly showed us the wide ranges of opportunities open to us as growing Pharmacy Technicians.
The Challenges Leading to Growth
There were definitely some nerve-wracking moments throughout both labs. We had lots of assessments and exams, and sometimes it felt like there was no time to breathe. I remember feeling so stressed before evaluations and worrying if I’d remember every small step. But looking back now, I realize how much those experiences helped me grow into the person I am today.
Each challenge built my confidence a little more each time, and by the end, I could see just how far I’d come. I progressed from nervous and unsure to focused, determined and proud of my progress.
Building Connections and Memories
Beyond the learning itself, one of the best parts of labs was the connections I made. Meeting everyone in person after spending time learning online made it even more special. Our cohort was full of such kind, supportive, and uplifting people. We helped each other through the stressful days and celebrated every single success together.
I’ve built relationships from this experience that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. The laughter, teamwork, and encouragement made the lab environment truly feel like a second home. I have so much appreciation for my amazing cohort for making this such a special chapter in my life. I will truly carry these memories with me forever.
Looking Back, and What’s Next to Come
Both the community and hospital lab portions were the perfect mix of connection, learning, and challenge. Each day pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me hands-on experience that will stay with me throughout my career. Being in practicums, I have truly learned the vital skills needed to be successful, and will continue to grow and learn throughout my career as a Pharmacy Technician.
For anyone considering the Pharmacy Technician program at Stenberg: it’s completely normal to feel nervous at first. But trust me when I say to embrace the experience, connect with your classmates, and give it your 100%. You’ll come out stronger, more confident, and so proud of what you’ve accomplished.
