About the Career

Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) play a vital role in healthcare by:

  • Performing phlebotomy (blood collection)
  • Sorting, preparing, and processing specimen samples
  • Performing electrocardiograms (ECGs)
  • Interacting directly with patients on a daily basis

As an MLA, you'll work behind the scenes in healthcare, ensuring accurate specimen collection and processing that physicians rely on for diagnosis and treatment decisions.

About the Program

In this 30-week program, you'll learn the art and skill of blood collection. Put theory into practice during labs and practicum placements, and learn from working industry professionals to develop clinical, technical, and empathetic communication skills.

Lower Mainland students will come to in-person labs in Surrey, BC and be placed in local health authorities for their practicum placements.

Vancouver Island students will come to in-person labs in Duncan, BC and be placed in Vancouver Island Health Authority and LifeLabs for their practicum placements.
