Program…Complete!

Well the time has finally come for my last blog entry and my final goodbye. I’ve enjoyed sharing my experiences with you over the past 15 months and I hope that I have given some insight into the Cardiology Technology program at Stenberg College. Every school has its flaws and there have been a lot of ups and downs along the way, but if I had to do it all over again I wouldn’t change where I received my education. Stenberg is the only post secondary institution in British Columbia that offers the Cardio Tech program through a classroom delivery. After taking my final year of high school online, it was important to me to study in person when it came time for college. Looking back now, this program would have been really difficult to complete successfully without the structured course outline and regular deadlines. I looked forward to going to class each day and I met some amazing people that I know will be in my life for a long time.

As far as job prospects go, I worked hard and received a job offer from my practicum site and started working as Cardiology Technologist one week after I finished the program. I am currently working under a Qualified but not Registered contract, which means that I still have to pass the national exam in April to secure long term work. About a month into my practicum I started hearing hints about being hired but it was a surprise to start so soon. I’ve already put in over 50 hours post-grad and I can’t tell you how good it feels to finally be making money again. It’s so nice to be able to work alone and not have to worry about having someone supervising me or double-checking my work. The transition from practicum student to working employee was a lot easier then I had anticipated. Everyone that I work with has been fantastic with welcoming me aboard and they all seem to have confidence in my abilities. I couldn’t be happier to have the chance to start my new career with the Interior Health Region and I hope to stay here for a long time.

It’s hard to think of the right words to conclude my student blog without sounding repetitive or cliche. First I want to thank everyone for reading and if you’ve just started with my practicum entries, I invite you to start from the beginning to get the whole picture. When I first started researching the Cardio Tech program, I had never heard of Stenberg College. There was no Cardio Tech blogger and when I tried to reach out to a Facebook alumni group, no one replied. I felt that I was taking a big risk by enrolling in this program because I really had no idea what I was getting myself into or what to expect. When the opportunity presented itself, I decided to write this blog with the prospective student in mind. I wanted to offer what I wished was available to me during the early stages of applying and I sincerely hope that my writing has given you an idea of what the program is like. Study hard and I hope that one day I’ll encounter a Cardiology Technologist graduate that started their journey by reading my blog. Good luck!
