Nursing Unit Clerk

Nursing Unit Clerks act as the heart of a health care unit by maintaining the pulse. They focus on non-clinical tasks, direct resources, communicate with patients, nurses and doctors, and ensure urgent tasks are completed efficiently. A Nursing Unit Clerk must be able to multitask, work in a fast-paced environment, and possess strong communication skills.

Hospital Clerk

A Hospital Clerk provides valuable clerical, secretarial, and administrative support in public and private health care settings. Typical duties include the admitting and registration of patients into various departments and/or hospital units, collecting patient data, data entry, clerical tasks, and handling patients’ charts.

About the Program

The Hospital Support Specialist and Nursing Unit Clerk program is 48 weeks long and includes a 6-week practicum in hospitals.

Graduates of the Hospital Support Specialist and Nursing Unit Clerk program can hold a variety of job titles such as:

  • Hospital Registration Clerks
  • Hospital Switchboard Operations Clerks
  • Diagnostic Imaging Clerks
  • Health Records Clerks
  • Nursing Unit Coordinators
  • Health Unit Coordinators
  • Unit Clerks

Our graduates demonstrate the knowledge base, skills and attitudes consistent with industry expectations for entry-level employment. Graduates are employed within health authorities and several non-hospital settings such as clinics, private surgical and diagnostic facilities. They are also able to seek a professional designation in the United States as a Certified Health Unit Coordinator.

Admission Requirements

Pre-requisites

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent*
  • Passing Stenberg College entrance examination or equivalent
  • Passing Verbal Test of English if ELL or equivalent*
  • Passing Stenberg College entrance informational interview
  • Minimum typing speed of 25 wpm
  • Completion of a Criminal Record Consent Form under the  Criminal Record Review Act

* Entrance requirements can be met with evidence of alternate assessments such as challenge exams or acceptable standardized English equivalency tests as per the Stenberg College language proficiency chart. Evidence of post-secondary studies at an equivalent level where English was the first language is acceptable.
